Metz’s Story
MidLantic Financial was founded in 2001 by Douglas E. Metz in Maryland, but our story begins much earlier. Initially beginning his career as a financial writer, later moving to the banking industry, culminating his 25+-year banking career as chief lending officer, Metz was often frustrated by low-quality and inconsistent appraisals and real estate products. So, he decided to learn everything he could about appraisals and reviewing appraisals and starting in 1978, helped to introduce review standards and practices into banks as early as 1984.
Metz’s leadership in the financial field earned him a reputation as an innovator, which led to key interactions with the Society of Real Estate Appraiser’s (precursor to the Appraisal Foundation) and ever-increasing advanced positions with financial institutions in the Philadelphia, Pittsburg and Greater Baltimore-DC markets. In 2002 Metz created MidLantic’s comprehensive narrative administrative appraisal review format, which to this day is still the only appraisal review format of its kind. Metz designed this format to consider and opine on a report’s market-extracted data, including the adequacy of comparables, support for assumptions, and the accuracy of all mathematical applications.
In May 2018, Metz lost his courageous battle with cancer. Since then, under the guidance and watchful eye of his beloved wife, Cynthia Pehl (who left the banking industry and joined the Company in 2010), MidLantic continues to honor the spirit of its founder, who clearly understood the needs of his clients because he once walked in their shoes.
Today, under the ever-present guidance provided by Cindy, MidLantic has three goals with every client and every transaction: protecting its clients by ensuring that the values on which they are making credit decisions are, in fact, credible results; delivering products and services on time, as promised; and making clients’ lives easier. To quote Pehl, “If we consistently achieve these goals, then we have met the expectations of the man who established an exceptionally high bar in 2001, when he started MidLantic.”
